Scattergories for web – but better

What is Really Boring Website?

Really Boring Website is essentially online Scattergories.

Every round, players get a list of categories and a letter, and try to fill out an answer for as many categories as possible starting with that letter.

Points are awarded for each "correct" answer (judged by other players) that isn't a repeat answer.

Thoughts on gameplay

Scattergories, and Really Boring Website, is a great game because it makes players flex a lot of muscles at once: thinking under pressure, creativity, and exploring one's range (since the categories tend to cover various topic areas).

Since only unique answers get points, there is a fun meta-game of trying to predict the obvious answers that other players will submit.

Judging is a particularly fun part of the game, as what constitutes an acceptably correct answer really varies depending on the group you're playing with.

Why it's good

Really Boring Website has a lot of things going for it.

Firstly, Scattergories is a classic. A great mix of time pressure, creativity, and judgment. The fact that all players share the same constraint is an especially nice aspect.

I think this is a particularly well-designed implementation, too. You can play with other players – both in public and private rooms. The game is fairly intuitive for new players to pick up and play.

The project also feels like a labor of love, which I really appreciate. I love the design and the occasional updates from the developer (which usually come with a nice note somewhere on the site).
